Beach Pit Firing (April)
Learn to fire design and fire a ceramic sculpture at the beach!
Service Description
Pit firing is the oldest known method for firing pottery. Pieces are nestled together in a fire pit and surrounded by combustible materials such as wood, saw dust, and seaweed. The top of the pit is then covered with larger pieces of wood and set on fire to finish the pottery. In this two session course, students will learn to make their own hand built ceramic sculptures/vessels and then meet at Dockweiler Beach to fire their ware! At the beach, students can add seaweed, oxides and salts to further affect the surface of the pots. This course meets twice. The first session is on April 20th from 12pm-2pm at Element Art Center. The second session meets one week later on April 27th, 12pm at Dockweiler Beach to fire the pottery! This session lasts roughly 4 hours, however may go longer depending on the time it takes for the bonfire to cool. No experience necessary! All materials are included. *Students' projects must not exceed 8'' **This is a high-risk method of firing, and cracking/explosions may occur!
