Discover the Art of Glass Fusion at Element Art Center

Glass fusion is an exciting and creative process that involves joining pieces of glass together by heating them in a kiln until they melt and fuse into a single piece. Unlike traditional stained glass, which uses lead and copper foil to connect pieces, glass fusion relies solely on heat to bond glass fragments into beautiful, cohesive artworks. This technique allows for endless possibilities in design, color, and texture, making it popular among artists and DIY enthusiasts alike.

What is Glass Fusion?

Glass fusion, sometimes called kiln-formed or fused glass, is the process of layering or arranging glass pieces and then heating them to high temperatures (typically between 1,100°F and 1,500°F) in a kiln. The heat causes the glass to soften and fuse together, creating a seamless and often stunning piece of art. Artists can experiment with different colors, shapes, and thicknesses to achieve unique visual effects.

The General Process of Glass Fusion

Each student can make 4 coasters!

  1. Selecting and Preparing Glass: Artists start by choosing compatible glass pieces, often in a variety of colors and textures. Glass must be clean and cut to the desired shapes and sizes.

  2. Arranging Layers: The selected glass pieces are carefully arranged on a base layer, often clear glass. Artists can layer, overlap, or create intricate patterns depending on their vision.

  3. Fusing in the Kiln: The assembled glass is placed in a kiln and heated to specific temperatures. At lower fusing temperatures, pieces retain more texture and dimension (tack fusing), while higher temperatures create a smooth, fully fused surface (full fusing).

  4. Cooling (Annealing): The fused glass is slowly cooled to prevent cracking or stress, completing the process and ensuring durability.
