Pit Firing Ceramics

Pit firing is an ancient technique that has been used for centuries to create beautifully unique ceramic ware. Unlike traditional kiln firing, pit firing involves using a pit dug into the ground to fire pottery, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces that showcase the natural and unpredictable effects of the process.

The pit firing process begins with carefully placing the pottery pieces in the pit along with combustible materials such as sawdust, leaves, and other organic materials. These materials create the distinctive patterns and colors on the pottery during the firing process. The pit is then ignited, and the pottery is left to slowly heat up and cool down over the course of several hours.

One of the most fascinating aspects of pit firing is the element of unpredictability. The unique conditions within the pit, including variations in temperature, oxygen levels, the distribution of combustible materials, and any added oxides all contribute to the individual character of each piece. As a result, no two pieces that come out of a pit firing are ever exactly alike, making each creation a truly one-of-a-kind work of art.

In addition to the stunning visual effects, pit firing also allows for a deeper connection to the natural elements. The process of firing pottery in a pit harkens back to our ancestors' methods of creating ceramics, providing a sense of continuity with the past and a profound appreciation for the earth's raw materials. Whether you're an experienced ceramic artist or just beginning to explore the world of pottery, pit firing offers a captivating and rewarding way to create unique and visually striking ceramic ware. The process celebrates the beauty of imperfection and embraces the unpredictable, resulting in pieces that are not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful.

If you're looking to add a touch of natural beauty and individuality to your ceramic creations, consider incorporating pit firing into your artistic practice. Element Art Center regularly offers Pit Firing Course on the beach. Students meet at Element Art Center for the first session to learn about hand building/sculpting clay and make their own piece(s) for the firing. Students then meet at Dockweiler Beach for the second session of the course to pit-fire their ware. The results are sure to inspire awe and wonder, both for the artist and those who have the privilege of experiencing the finished pieces.
